People Can works in England and Wales with people with fewer chances in life, helping them to use their abilities and work together for better lives and stronger communities. All of their work centres around the ‘can do’ principle: ask people what they can do and you get can do people. We hosted the launch of People Can on Tuesday 25th October, an evening of celebration of the great work People Can does. The event was attended by the Lady Mayoress of Liverpool and many of the people who have greatly benefitted from the charity's work.CUC Liverpool is a big part of People Can’s work. As a cultural and commercial hub in Liverpool, we run it as a social business. CUC hosts hundreds of arts, culture and corporate events every year. This means that all the money spent here is continually reinvested into supporting people and communities.Until 4th November, come and visit the Heroes and Heroines exhibition on 5th Gallery, a photography exhibition inspired by the People that can.For more information about People Can and how you can help visit www.peoplecan.org.uk

New Accommodation Service Opens In Liverpool This Week

Not a lot of people know that the work we do at CUC Liverpool helps to fund community support across the Merseyside and North West regions. All the fun stuff we host and put on ensures that every penny we make gets reinvested, helping those with the fewest opportunities. One of the projects we've invested in is an accommodation service. Split across 2 properties in the city, the service launches this week, with 3 people expected to move in ASAP. The service offers single homeless men a place to get involved, make a positive contribution, get great support, and take steps towards the future they want. And we're proud to be part of it.

Nordic Events At ‘threshold Festival’ Liverpool

Threshold Film events: Sunday 13th Feb, 3 pm Introduces ‘About and Island’ (a film about the Danish band Efterklang) and ‘Iceland-Beyond Sigur-Ros’ a documentary exploring the contemporary music scene of Iceland, this event will be followed by Q and A with the Production team.ABOUT AN ISLAND In August 2010, French filmmaker Vincent Moon and Efterklang 8 piece-live band met uup on an island off the Danish coast. The objective was to shoot a film. A film with the same length as an album, and a film full of performances, experiments and collaborations. Over an intense period of 4 days Efterklang collaborated with more then 200 local musicians, kids and parent, creating new performances and interpretations of songs from their album ‘Magic Chairs’ICELAND: Beyond Sigur Ros.The Manchester- based film and video team, Serious Feather, introduce this 30 minute film introducing and exploring the contemporary music scene of Iceland. As well as performances from Hafdis Huld, Berndsen, Mugison, Olafur Arnalds, Lara Runars, Bloodgroup, For A Minor Reflectiono, Seabear, Sykur, Severed Crotch and DJ Musician, it features interviews with Haukur Magnusson, the editor of Reykjavik’s Grapevine Magazine, Olafur Arnalds, highly respected composer and producer, and Petur Úlfur Einarsson and Hafsteinn Gudmundsson, the founders of online music distributors gogoyoko. The Esoteric Gender 7 pm at the CUCThe Esoteric Gender started off with the encounter of Lisa Jamesdaughter, from Manchester, England, and Jean-Christophe Salaün, from Caen, Normandy, France in 2007 in a creative writing course at the University of Iceland. As they built a strong friendship, they realized their musical tastes were very similar – they both had a predilection for highly melodic electronica. For eighteen months following their encounter they shared their personal productions with each other, while working sporadically together on a few songs. It is not until the end of summer 2008 that they considered the option of forming a band and composing new material as well as rearranging older songs. As their portfolio was growing, they met Thomas Brorsen Smidt, a drummer from Denmark, and asked him to join the band to give life to their songs on stage. After a short concert warming up for Irish singer Joanne Kearney in March 2009, for which they received very enthusiastic feedback, they found a new band member in the person of Gabriel Malenfant, from Quebec, who then became their guitarist. They have since worked a lot on improving their live performances and are putting together their first album with the help of sound engineer Justin Stretch from Liverpool. A release is to be expected in the autumn 2010. Each of their concerts has so far brought enthusiasm amongst the audience, charmed by the ecclectic spectrum of their songs, alternating between dark and atmospheric downtempo and psychedelic dance and rock. To put it in one word, trip rock. To Book tickets or find out more about the Threshold Festival CLICK HERE

The Explanation Of The Extraordinary

Set against the backdrop of her current exhibition 'Extraordinary Drawings' , Laurie Lipton was the focus of a Q&A session at the Contemporary Urban Centre recently.Fresh from her exhibition at Pulse Contemporary Art Fair in New York and a recent stint at The Saatchi Gallery, Laurie Lipton's unique brand of provocative imagery now sits in the Contemporary Urban Centre, as part of the Homotopia Festival. This exhibition premieres her most recent output, alongside a selection of drawings from her archives to create one of the most comprehensive displays of Lipton’s work ever to be seen in the UK.Lipton answered questions about her globetrotting past, her main motivations, the techniques she uses and what her paintings portray about her personality. The session allowed fans and art aficionados develop a better understanding of both the artist and her exhibition. When pressed on her passion for drawing Lipton explained "Ever since I was a little girl, I had the desire to draw. I don't know why. It's an urge, a need. I'm happiest when I'm sitting at my drawing table. The rest of life seems like an annoying interruption. I would gladly just draw and never go out or talk to anyone… but I'm afraid I might disappear up my own whatsit. What a horrible way to go!"With the incredible intricacy and detail of Lipton's work it was inevitable attendees where going to be interested how long does it takes to complete her remarkable drawings. "If I sit down in front of a ginormous piece of paper and say, "Okay…. this is going to take me 3 months to complete if I work 12 hours a day, 6 days a week", I think I would just stare at it in despair and not begin" Lipton explained " They take as long as they take. It's not the finished drawing but the process that interests me. In fact, once a drawing is "complete", I immediately lose interest in it. People ask me how I can bear to sell something that took so much time and effort. I reply, "It's the NEXT one that's going to be amazing!"I set impossible tasks for myself; a thousand faces, a city with every window showing, a landscape with each blade of grass……… if I were aware of the time it took, I really wouldn't bother to put myself through it. I'm not a masochist. I approach each drawing with a "Wow! Can I?" feel, and damn the time and consequences. So…..when people ask, as they inevitably do, how long a drawing took me, I lie to them and make up a number. I really have no idea."Lipton’s exhibition will be in the third floor gallery at the Contemporary Urban Centre until 7th January 2010. www.laurielipton.comwww.homotopia.net

The Institute for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (ISBE) held their 32nd Annual Conference recently at the Contemporary Urban Centre, Liverpool. The conference, which annually attracts up to 500 delegates from across the globe, gave an opportunity for researchers, educators, practitioners and policy makers to discuss and debate the cutting edge research into small business and entrepreneurship. The event also offered a superb opportunity for networking for the delegates. Liverpool was chosen due to its vibrant entrepreneurial and community spirit which has assisted with the fantastic scale of local regeneration, helping the city win the title of “European Capital of Culture” in 2008. The Contemporary Urban Centre is right in the heart of Liverpool’s independent arts quarter and was identified by the ISBE as a creative entrepreneurial case study in its own right.

The Chartered Institute of Public Relations held its annual Northern Conference on Tuesday at The West Yorkshire Playhouse in Leeds. The one day conference, now in its eighth year, was proudly sponsored by the Contemporary Urban Centre and provided the opportunity for our Director of Operations, Dino Moutsopoulos, to present to influential PR figures, event managers and the media. Dino was in great company, rubbing shoulders with the likes of Alastair Campbell, Yasmin Diamond (Director of Communication, Home Office) and Heather McGregor (Columnist, Financial Times) to name but a few of his fellow speakers. The conference placed particular focus on social networking and digital media, offering insight and advice into how their introduction has changed the PR, marketing and events landscape.
The young people of Liverpool were given the chance to quiz the Prime Minister on issues which will affect their future. Gordon Brown attended a Radio City Question Time event which was held in the Mezzanine Bar at Contemporary Urban Centre on Greenland Street. The theme for the discussion was Building Britain’s Future and the questions put to the Prime Minister were centred on employment, education and the future prospects of young people. The audience was made up of 50 local 15-25 year olds from a variety of backgrounds. Maria Donoghue- Mills, chief executive of the Novas Scarman Group, the social enterprise which owns the Contemporary Urban Centre said: “We are honoured to have hosted this event at our venue. We have a strong local youth engagement policy here at the Contemporary Urban Centre and we are happy that we were able to assist in providing them with a platform from which their voices could be heard."
